Periodontics

Periodontics is the specialty of Dentistry that studies the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the tissues that support the teeth (gums), with the aim of maintaining the health, function and aesthetics of the mouth.

Periodontal disease manifests itself as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gum when eating or brushing the teeth, without affecting the bone) or as periodontitis, formerly called “pyorrhoea”, which includes destruction of the bone that supports the teeth. If not stopped in time, it causes tooth loss. It can be manifested by bleeding gums when eating or brushing the teeth and inflammation, although it is not usually painful, and also produces bad breath (halitosis), gum recession (shrinkage) and tooth mobility.

The treatment consists of a first phase in which scrapings are performed to stabilize the disease and, subsequently, in some cases the lost tissues are regenerated through bone and gum grafts..

With gum grafts we manage in some cases to recover all the lost tissue (all the gum that had shrunk). In addition, we also get higher quality gum, much more stable over time.

“With bone and gum grafts we manage to recover the lost tissue.”
